Nafplio Castle Run 2015

In November 29 2015, the city of Nafplio celebrated it’s release from the Turks. Part of the celebrations was for the first time “Palamidios Athlos”, a special event with total distance 5Km. The first part is the uphill toward the historic castle from the 999 stairs, passing through the castle and the second part is the downhill from the road to the finish in the center of the town.

Fortress of Palamidi is one of the greatest achievements of Venetian fortification architecture. Construction of the fortress took place from 1711 to 1714. The liberation of the city began from Palamidi and was led by Staikos Staikopoulos liberating the city after a long siege in the night of November 29, 1822.

The race was honored by numerous athletes and it was organized by the Municipality of Nafplio, the Municipal Organization for Sport, Culture, Tourism and Environment of Municipal of Nafplio, the Regional Union of Argolis, the Peloponnese EAS Athletics Federation, the Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, the Argolis runner’s club and with the help of Ministry of Sports and Hellenic Athletics Federation.
