Crete Marathon 2019

With the number of registered participants exceeding the 3,500 runners, the 4th Marathon of Crete took place on Sunday 21 April. The Event was organized by the Chania Running Club, in collaboration with the Chania Anti-Region, the Municipalities of the Regional Unity, the institutional cooperation of the Educational Community and under the auspices of the Region of Crete, the Greek Tourism Organization, AIMS and SEGAS.

The Marathon of Crete was dedicated to Metropolitan Ireneos Galanakis, while the 10 km race was dedicated to the memory of Kostas Iliakis. Honorary was the presence of delegations from the Production Schools of the Armed Forces.

The experience for the participants was unforgettable, as they run in the Venetian Harbor of Chania!

The event was framed by parallel cultural events. Among them was the ceremony of the cutting of Kotinos from the ancient olives of Vouves, which is an Olympic symbol, as well as the Torch Relay that took place on the eve of the race and thereafter the opening ceremony with the Philharmonic of the Municipality of Chania and the rock band “Dragons” which was held at the square of the Municipal Market of Chania.

The Marathon of Crete with the certification of its courses has been included in the competition calendar of the World Association of International Marathons (AIMS) and has been approved by the Hellenic Athletics Federation. It has also been established as a yearly race in the sporting events of the country and it is the largest sports festival in Crete, but also an annual sports and tourist destination for Crete.
