“Bravery is a wound that always runs blood, my God, and how does endure it the one who has it.”

The image of the 3rd Crete- Marathon was celebrated by the spontaneous initiative of the participating runner in the marathon race, Manolis Papadakis from Ierapetra, who cut the thread of the 3rd Crete Marathon by holding a lyre in his hand! He dedicating the above “mantinada” to the hero Giorgos Baltadoros, who lost his life on Thursday, April 12 as well as to his family.

With more than 2,500 runners, the 3rd Marathon of Crete took place on Sunday 15 April. The Event was organized by the Chania Runners’ Club, in collaboration with the Chania Anti-Region, the Municipalities of the Regional Unity, the Educational Community and under the auspices of the Region of Crete, the Greek Tourism Organization, AIMS and SEGAS.

The Marathon of Crete, with the certification of its routes, has been included in the AIMS calendar- Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.

After the success of its 3 years course, the Event with the parallel cultural activities: torch-relay, cutting of olive branch from the ancient Olive of the Vouves and the opening Ceremony with the music program, have been established as the biggest sports festival in Crete, as well as an annual sports and from 2018, tourist destination were more than 45 foreign runners participated including the winner of the Marathon road.

All the participants had the opportunity to have an unforgettable running experience in the Venetian Port of Chania which is one of the most important monuments of architecture in Greece, and a trademark of the regional unit of Chania.
